The Edenton Academy, a private white school, was chartered in 1770 by Joseph Blount, Joseph Hewes, George Blair and Samuel Johnston. The first Academy was built in 1891 by contractor J. W. Spruill on Court Street between East Church and East Queen Streets. In 1895 a new academy (shown) was built on the same site and used as a public white school until Edenton Graded School, a brick building was erected in 1916. The Academy had a central hall with two classrooms on either side. The picture shown is believed to have been taken in 1905. Courtesy (HESHS) |
This book depicts the history and abundant genealogy of Edenton and Chowan County, North Carolina from 1890 through 2001. Softcover, 128 pages. ISBN 0-7385-0695-8. Published by Arcadia Publishing. First published 2001.
EDENTON and CHOWAN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, tells a fascinating story of the first unofficial Colonial capital established in North Carolina in 1722. Edenton was named in honor of Governor Charles Eden, one of the Lord's Proprietors, who governed from 1714-1722. Thomas Pollock served as President of the Council.
Featured are the 1800's-1930's waterfront and Chowan Counties most import 1700's industry - seine fishing. The Norfolk and Southern railroad, which arrived in 1881, established a connection with the more southern counties by using a 750-foot rail car carrier ship the John W. Garrett, to cross the Albemarle Sound. Edenton is a beautifully preserved city which still retains much of its 1800's character. It is well worth a visit!
Shown is the original 1890's Main Street and such grand homes as Wessington House, Beverly Hall and the antebellum neighborhoods of Church and Granville Streets and several Chowan County plantation homes. Visit the Black community. See the grand old Edenton Academy and other schools and churches of Edenton and Chowan County. It's all here in this wonderful collection of some 215 old and new B&W photos which were compiled and edited by Eastern North Carolina historian/photographer Louis Van Camp of Washington, North Carolina.
[This book was proofread by local Edenton historian Anne Graham, President of the Edenton Women's Club. Additional proofreading was performed by Linda Eure, Director of Historic Edenton State Historic Site. Mrs. Eure's office is located in the Historic Edenton Visitor' s Center at 108 North Broad Street, Edenton, North Carolina.]
This Norfolk and Southern Railroad Mogul C-2 type 2-6-0, No. 104 engine was built by Baldwin in 1890. This 1908 photo shows a Baldwin engine standing on the Albemarle Sound trestle while it was still under construction. During construction there were several accidents. The south shore end of the trestle collapsed in 1909 and a Baldwin engine with two cars were lost, as was the engineer's life. The trestle was reconstructed and completed in 1910. (Courtesy N&SRR)
The John W. Garrett, under the command of Captain Samuel Ferebee Williams (1849-1923) carried rail cars across the Albemarle Sound. This crossing usually lasted one-hour and forty-five minutes. (Courtesy N&SRR)
This interior of Dr. Hines' Drug Store shows the beautiful wood cabinetry, the marble soda fountain and the stenciled metal ceiling. From left to right, the men are believed to be; Abraham Paxton, Dr. O. L. Holley, Dr. Charles H. Hines and (unknown). This store was occupied by the meat market of Cecil B. Byrum in the 1930s, and later by the Harrell and Leary Hardware Store. (1920s photo courtesy Ann Perry)
Undertaker Louis F. Zeigler was a great admirer of the Studebaker Company c.1852. In 1917 Zeigler contracted for a Studebaker 1/2 ton chassis and a J. Paul Bateman hearse body from local car dealer J. H. Mc Mullen, Jr., for the sum of $1,895. Pictured here, alongside his brand new Studebaker Hearse, was his son Haywood Sawyer Ziegler (1896-1969), who at age 21 was working for his father. Zeigler's wife Fannie Keeter Ziegler (1900-1980) is believed to have been the first North Carolina woman to obtain a funeral director's license. In later years a grandson, Haywood Sawyer Ziegler, Jr. (1923-1975), ran the business until it closed in the 1970's. (1918 postcard courtesy Evelyn Powell)
This 1916 picture shows, left to right; Annie Shepard Graham (1880-1969) at age 36, William Alexander Graham, MD (1905-1992) at age 11, and John Washington Graham (1908-1980) at age eight. (Courtesy Anne Rowe)
